DE PHILLIPPI QUICKEST OVERALL IN TWO DAYS OF STAR MAZDA SPRING TRAINING AT BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK – FIVE DRIVERS, VETERANS AND ROOKIES, UNDER THE OFFICIAL LAP RECORD March 21, 2012 / Barber Motorsports Park – The teams and drivers of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear put on another day of unofficial record-smashing during the second of two days of 'spring training' at Barber Motorsports Park. Unofficial because lap records can only be set in qualifying or the race… but impressive nonetheless. Connor De Phillippi (#2 Juncos Racing / ModSpace Racing / One24), now entering his third season and by far the most experienced driver in the series, was the star of both days, breaking the lap record of 1:21.166 – set last year by eventual series champion Tristan Vautier – yesterday on Lap 20 of Session 1 and then even more thoroughly today on Lap 19 of Session 4 with a best time of 1:20.076. But he wasn't the only one; there were, in fact, five drivers under the record, including Petri Suvanto, the quickest rookie during both days. The Finnish driver, 2011 USF2000 champion and winner of the Mazda Road to Indy scholarship to race in Star Mazda, turned a quick lap of 1:20.712 in his (#81 Team Pelfrey / Mazda Road to Indy Mazda). |
CONNOR DE PHILLIPPI QUICKEST OVERALL IN DAY 1 OF STAR MAZDA TESTING AT BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK – PETRI SUVANTO QUICKEST ROOKIE IN FIELD OF 21 CARS March 20, 2012 / Barber Motorsports Park – With the 2012 season-opener at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg just six days away, the teams and drivers of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear are engaged in a bit of 'Spring Training' today and tomorrow at Barber Motorsports Park. And they're keeping the top of the time sheets pretty much 'all in the family.' With three sessions now in the books, Star Mazda veteran Connor De Phillippi, driving this year for Juncos Racing, not only set the quick time of the day on the 20th lap of Session 1 - 1:20.607 (102.721 mph) – but he also broke, by a lot, the Star Mazda track record at Barber -- 1:21.166 (102.013 mph) -- set last year in qualifying for Round 2 of the 2011 season by eventual champion Tristan Vautier. De Phillippi, who finished 2nd in the Star Mazda Championship battle last year, was the 2009 Skip Barber Pro Series champion and moved up to Star Mazda in 2010 with scholarship funding from the Mazda Road to Indy. |
